Reason For Derby vs Millwall Predictions

  • Millwall are now unbeaten in six matches, three of which they’ve won.
  • Derby are one of only seven Championship teams to have conceded less than ten home goals this season.
  • Derby have only lost one of their 11 Championship matches at Pride Park this term.

Pride Park a fortress

Derby are long way from the heady heights of last season, which culminated in a trip to Wembley for the play-off final. After getting so close to returning to the Premier League in May, there was plenty of optimism surrounding the Rams ahead of the new season, even though they parted ways with manager Frank Lampard.

This time around, under Phillip Cocu, Derby have struggled to get going. After winning just six out of 21 games, Derby find themselves in a rather unflattering 16th position. They’re nine points shy of the top six, which is where they undoubtedly want to be.

Fortunately, in relation to this match, The Rams remain tough to beat at home, where they’ve lost only one out of 11 this term. They haven’t scored an abundance of goals, accruing a modest 14, scoring more than once on just three occasions, but they’ve very good at the other end of proceedings, where they’ve allowed only eight goals, keeping five clean sheets. They should fancy themselves to, at the very least, keep Millwall quiet on Saturday, as they’ve conceded just two goals in their last five at Pride Park.

Millwall improving under Rowett

Like Derby, Millwall, after flirting with the top six in recent seasons, didn’t get off to a great start under long-serving manager Neil Harris, but they’ve since turned things around after a managerial switch-up.

Gary Rowett took charge at The Den back in late October. Since then Millwall have lost just one out of seven, while they’re now unbeaten in six, three of which they’ve won. They’re not looking like a side that is going to string together loads of wins, but they look tough to beat and are ultimately fighting hard to stay in games, so Lions’ fans probably won’t be complaining.

Lack of goals in store?

When we look at the recent performances of both teams, especially in their respective home and away games, a lack of goals starts to appeal. Specifically, ‘Both Teams to Score – NO’ gets the nod. Derby may have only failed to score in one of their home games this term, but their attacking efforts haven’t been great, which is why they scored more than one on so few occasions. Their defensive efforts have been very encouraging, as three clean sheets in their last five suggest. What’s more, under Rowett, Millwall have started to give little away on the road, conceding just two goals in their last three, during which time they’ve given away very few clear-cut scoring opportunities. Add in that both teams rank in the bottom half when it comes to shots on target for this term and a lack of goals looks to be the way to go.
