Can Ecuador spring a surprise?

Ecuador have undoubtedly been the surprise package in CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying (WCQ) this time around as they search for their first World Cup finals appearance since 2014.

A major contributing factor to their success so far has been their home form, Ecuador have picked up an astonishing 70% of their points in the heady heights of Quito, which could perhaps be partly thanks to the high altitude of the ground.

Tricky test for unbeaten Brazil

While Brazil have already qualified for the 2022 World Cup, they could become the first side to remain unbeaten in an entire CONMEBOL WCQ cycle under it’s current guise (W11, D2).

Although Brazil appear unstoppable in this group, their games produced more goals on average than only two other nations. Combine that with the fact that they face the second-best home side at approximately 2750 metres above sea level and they could be in for a cagey affair.

Brazil actually failed to win three of their four away qualifiers played in Ecuador, though three of those games also saw two or fewer goals. As such, I am going for under 2.5 goals as my main prediction but Brazil should come out on top, perhaps by a conservative 2-0 scoreline.
