Empoli vs Roma Predictions
- Empoli, who must win to get out of the bottom three, are unbeaten in three at home with two wins and two clean sheets
- Roma, who will finish sixth no matter what happens, have failed to win their last three away games
Don’t write off Empoli’s escapologists
Empoli have a shot at completing one of the greatest acts of escapology in recent Serie A history when they take on a Roma side whose minds could be elsewhere on the final day of the campaign.
The Giallorossi will definitely finish sixth in the standings, but that could be good enough to earn them a spot in next season’s expended Champions League as long as Atalanta finish fifth.
With nothing on the game, Daniele de Rossi’s side may not be able to deny the hosts the three points that would keep them up. Empoli were stuck in the bottom three for almost the entire first half of the season before a six-game unbeaten run in January gave them hope.
Roma players unlikely to be fully focused
However, they slipped back into the drop zone a couple of weeks ago and Udinese’s stoppage-time equaliser in last week’s 1-1 draw felt pretty fatal when it left them there heading into the final round of fixtures.
Gli Azzurri have successfully battled the drop for the past two seasons and the fat that they receive a disinterested Roma side gives them a real chance of pulling off another escape. Davide Nicola’s side have won two of their lats three home matches anyway while Roma have failed to win any of their last three on the road.
A 1-0 home victory could be the best play in the correct score book as Empoli have kept back-to-back home clean sheets ahead of this and many of the Roma players will be thinking about events in Bergamo or trying to avoid injury ahead of summer international tournaments.
