Empoli vs Roma Predictions
- Empoli are yet to win in their six competitive outings this season, and have won just twice since December 2021.
- Roma, meanwhile, have three wins from their first five Serie A matches.
- The Giallorossi beat Empoli home and away last term, scoring six goals in those matches.
- Empoli have won just one of their last 13 home matches in all competitions, losing five.
Giallorossi aiming to bounce back
Roma failed to even concede from open play en route to taking 10 points from their opening four matches of the Serie A season, so the shock at their 4-0 defeat at Udinese last week was palpable. Jose Mourinho’s men followed up that hammering with a 2-1 Europa League reverse at Ludogorets, and need to arrest their slide on Monday. Fortunately for the special one, Empoli may be the ideal opponents.
Indeed, Empoli remain winless this season, following up an early Coppa Italia exit with one loss and four draws from their opening five league games. While Paulo Zanetti is now at the helm, their poor form has followed on from a dire end to last term – they have won two of their last 28 games dating back to last December. Meanwhile, the Azzurri have won just one of their last 13 home games, a sequence which includes a 4-2 thrashing by Roma in January.
Roma may have lost back-to-back games, but their underlying stats remain among Serie A’s finest thus far, and they certainly enter the contest as strong favourites. Only Napoli and Inter have created more than their 10 expected goals (xG) or recorded more than their 28 shots on target. The Giallorossi may have several injury problems, but they managed to rest a handful of key players in Bulgaria and will be highly motivated to atone for their recent defeats in Tuscany.
Roma set for away win?
Given Empoli’s winless start and poor home record – they earned just 41 per cent of their points at home last term – backing Roma for victory appears the obvious play.
However, both teams have scored in each of the hosts’ last three games and Roma’s defence has begun to wobble, so a 2-1 away win appears a decent correct score prediction.
