Tip Reasoning

  • England have won six of their seven group games
  • Hungary have lost three of their last four, including a 4-0 loss to England
  • The Three Lions have averaged over three goals per game in this group
  • The hosts have scored 32 goals across their last seven home qualifers

England claim routine win

Gareth Southgate guided England to a straightforward win over minnows Andorra on Saturday night, with the Three Lions crushing them 5-0 away from home. That made it six wins from seven for England, who are on the verge of securing their place in Qatar.

There are only three games left for Southgate’s men and their two biggest rivals in the group meet this week. Albania beat Hungary 1-0 on Saturday to stay in second, so they are battling Poland for the playoff spot as England march towards first place. Don’t expect Hungary to be much of an obstacle at Wembley this week.

Hungary’s Euro hangover

Hungary put in three strong displays at Euro 2020, including a 2-2 draw with Germany in their final group game. However, they’ve not been able to build on that tournament appearance in the Autumn, losing three of their four games since.

Two of those defeats came against Albania, results which have all but ended Hungary’s ambitions of finishing second in the group. Making the playoffs looks beyond the Hungarians and with little to play for they’ve been priced up as huge outsiders here.

Back England to thrill again

Hungary’s other post-Euros defeat was a 4-0 hammering at home to England last month. That heavy defeat saw them completely outclassed by Southgate’s team and I see this being another comfortable win for the Three Lions.

Since losing the final of the Euros England have won three of their four games, with each of those wins coming by at least four goals. The Three Lions have scored 23 times across their seven group games, while they’ve scored 32 across their last seven home qualifiers.

With Hungary looking vulnerable I’m backing England’s great scoring run to continue. Over 2.5 England goals is my prediction, alongside a 3-0 win for the hosts.
