England vs Russia Predictions
England have a great chance of making a deep run in this year’s European Championships. The perennially underachieving side have a vibrant young squad who performed brilliantly on their way to a perfect record in qualifying. The majority of the squad have had excellent domestic seasons and the options up front are exciting. Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane led the scoring charts in the Premier League and the emerging talent of Marcus Rashford showed when he netted with his first ever shot for England against Australia.
They haven’t performed to the best of their abilities in the warm up games though, with unconvincing performances against Turkey and Australia. They did manage to win both of these games 2-1 though, so hope is not lost just yet. These two victories made it nine wins from their last 11 games, with only defeats to Spain and Netherlands marring their record. They have beaten France and Germany during this period too, and these two defeats are their only losses since the World Cup in Brazil.
This good form along with the general unpredictability of tournament favourites France, the out of form Germans, and the declining Spain squad make this England’s year to succeed, if they don’t bottle it that is!
Russia haven’t been in great form in the lead up to the Euros. They lost against the Czech Republic at the start of June to make it three defeats in their last four outings. The absence of Alan Dzagoev is a huge blow to their chances as well.
They have performed well competitively since Fabio Capello was dismissed in favour of Leonid Slutsky though, with the CSKA boss saving their qualification campaign and leading them to 2nd position in Group G. They finished eight points adrift of group winners Austria and two ahead of Sweden in 3rd.
England undoubtedly have the talent in their squad to win this game, and I expect the young guns to break the trend of England bottling it with an opening match win in Marseille. Odds of 19/20 for an England Win look good value to me, and I’m backing another 2-1 correct score prediction at 17/2 as well.
