Exeter City find themselves in fourth place after 20 games but they did lose ground on the top two as they fell to a 2-1 loss to Northampton. It was their first defeat at home all season and leaves them with just one win in five and that came in an FA Cup replay. The Grecians have failed to win any of their last three league matches losing two of them and their defence is their Achilles heel. Despite scoring 32 times they have conceded 23 times in 20 matches and their expected goals conceded (XGc) stands at 1.3.

On the other hand a rather pragmatic approach has landed Tranmere in 10th place and just two points off the play-off places. Rovers have won back-to-back matches and eked out a narrow 1-0 victory over Oldham Atheltic on the road last time out. They have now taken seven points from their last nine in the league despite scoring just 16 goals this term. A win at Oldham was just their second win on the road in the league but they have drawn five of their 10 road games. The visitors have conceded just 14 goals but I think they will succumb to an Exeter attack who have scored 32 goals already this season. However, at the other end they have enough to cause their hosts problems so I’m predicting a 1-1 draw.
