Desperate Austria to edge matters in Torshavn

Back to back defeats against Israel and Scotland have left Austria on the brink and Franco Foda’s side have to beat Faroe Islands in Torshavn this weekend to keep their faint qualification hopes in-tact.

The Austrians are struggling in fourth with just seven points on the board from six matches and they go into this qualifying double header four points adrift of The Tartan Army with just four Group F fixtures left to play.

With one of those remaining games coming in midweek away to runaway leaders Denmark, who slaughtered them 4-0 in March, it’s safe to say that Austria’s participation at Qatar 2022 looks highly unlikely.

Nonetheless, they should pass this first test in Torshavn after a 3-1 victory over the Faroes in Vienna earlier in the campaign, though it wouldn’t shock us to see the hosts get on the scoresheet again.

Austria’s often hapless backline have surrendered 13 goals already in Group F, so backing an away win and both teams to score appeals far more here than siding with the visitors at skinny odds in the 1X2 market.

The margin of success shouldn’t be too drastic as the Faroe’s have been more competitive than usual in this campaign, with Hakan Ericson’s men even managing to limit Denmark to just a single goal on their penultimate start.
