Man Utd look to bounce back after FA Cup exit
Manchester United lost their first domestic away game in over a year before the international break as a rotated side were deservedly dumped out of the FA Cup at Leicester, but they should have what it takes to return to winning ways when they host Brighton on Sunday.
In the Premier League, the Red Devils are unbeaten since that shock defeat to Sheffield United back in January, and while they haven’t won as many of these nine matches as they would have liked they still find themselves in a promising position.
Their previously leaky defence has been plugged and they head into this game having kept a clean sheet in each of their last four league matches, including back-to-back wins over Manchester City and West Ham.
Seagulls ease relegation fears
Brighton can also look back on consecutive victories, but their wins came against the struggling duo of Southampton and Newcastle and prior to that they had lost four and won none of their last six games.
These two wins have put them six points clear of the relegation zone and made life a little more comfortable for Graham Potter’s Seagulls, but the season is far from over and they face a trio of tough fixtures over the next few weeks.
Tight home win expected at Old Trafford
Manchester United and Brighton have already faced off twice this season and on both occasions Manchester United have put three past the Seagulls, although their trip to the Amex in the Premier League back in September was an incredibly fortuitous win for the visitors.
Another three goals looks unlikely given Manchester United’s recent form and the fact they could be without Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, but their newfound defensive rigidity should be enough to guide them past a Brighton side that have kept just one clean sheet in their last five matches.
A Manchester United win is our pick of the bets, and a repeat of their 1-0 scoreline at home to West Ham looks the best option for a correct score prediction.
Manchester United injuries and team news
Juan Mata and Phil Jones are the only two confirmed absentees, but Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood are major doubts after withdrawing from international duty with injuries. Anthony Martial could return after making the bench for France, while David de Gea is back from his personal leave and gives Ole Gunnar Soskjaer a big selection headache as he tries to choose between the Spaniard and Dean Henderson.
Brighton injuries and team news
Florin Andone, Solly March and Tariq Lamptey are all ruled out for Brighton but Graham Potter is hopeful that Adam Webster could return to the squad for this tie. Aaron Connolly is a big doubt after picking up an injury while on international duty though.
