Melgar vs Universidad De Chile Predictions

Tuesday’s Copa Libertadores second round qualification, first leg clash sees Peruvians FBC Melgar doing battle with Universidad de Chile. The hosts will be looking to establish an advantage ahead of a difficult looking second leg.

Melgar will be desperately hoping 2019 is the year they have more of an impact on the Copa Libertadores. Los Rojinegros were dumped out of the competition at this very stage last season by Chilean second tier outfit Santiago Wanderers, whilst 2016 and 2017 group stage appearances harvested a combined total of just 3 points.

As such, the Peruvians can hardly be considered a powerhouse on the continental stage and are big underdogs in this tie over two legs. Nonetheless, they do have one factor in their advantage and that’s the high altitude present at the Estadio de la Universidad Nacional San Agustín. Situated almost 2,400 metres above sea level, the stadium provides a stern test for any visitors, thanks to the gruelling conditions present and having won 13 of their last 17 home games, Melgar will be confident in securing some kind of advantage on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Universidad travel fully aware of the difficulty the trip presents but safe in the knowledge they have a home leg to come that they should win easily. Possessing far greater resources and quality than their opponents, this a tie La U really should be progressing from and making the group stage is the minimum expectation for the side in the competition this year.

Frank Kudelka had a rocky start to life in the Universidad dugout but by the end of 2018 he had settled in well, almost running out domestic champions and now in his first full year, hopes are high for a positive campaign across all fronts. Last season, the visitors were eliminated from the Libertadores at the group stage but for now, focus can only be on making it that far this time around.

Ultimately, we don’t expect Melgar to advance from this tie over two legs but their prospects do look quite strong when taking this match as a standalone fixture. They are typically a powerful force on home territory and Universidad are not used to playing at such a high altitude.

As such, we quite like the price on offer for a home win here and that’s exactly where our money is going. The visitors have lost 6 of their last 7 Libertadores away games and having failed to score in 4 of their last 5, we envisage them slipping to a narrow 1-0 defeat on Tuesday.
