FCK seek early statement in title battle
FC Copenhagen take on AaB in the first round of fixtures in Denmark’s Superligaen on Sunday.
FCK came in third in the standings last season, six points behind champions Bronby, and enjoyed a strong finish despite losing their final match at Randers.
The Byens Hold won their final three home games – including victories over the two teams who came in above them – and won nine of their 16 games at the Parken base last term, with four draws and just three defeats.
AaB were involved in the relegation round at the end of last season but came through comfortably and finished 20 points clear of the drop zone. The Aalborg outfit’s away form was their undoing last year as they won just four of their 16 away fixtures, with six draws and six defeats, and a trip to a strong Copenhagen side looks like a tough way for them to start the new season.
Copenhagen have enjoyed a productive pre-season with two wins a draw and just one defeat, coming in a tricky fixture at Rapid Vienna, and they should be able to open the new season with all three points as they look to mount a title challenge.
FCK finished last year with a 10-game unbeaten run at Parken (W6, D4) but they managed just one clean sheet during that period and as such a home win with both teams to score stands out. AaB averaged just over a goal a game on their travels last year (19 goals in 16 games) and taking that into account a 3-1 win for the home side could be the way to go in the correct score market.
