Lyon seek more Euro brilliance against in-form Porto
Wednesday’s Europa League last-16 first leg should be a pretty wild game with both Porto and Lyon involved in some high scoring contests lately. The Portuguese league leaders won 4-2 at Pacos de Ferreira on Sunday to stay six points clear while Lyon looked good in their 4-1 away win at Lorient on Friday.
While Peter Bosz’s side haven’t been anywhere near consistent enough to mount a top three challenge in domestic football, they have been brilliant and ruthless in European competition. Lyon cruised through the first section, taking the most points of any team in the group stage.
The French giants scored 16 goals across their six Group A matches and claimed four points from a Rangers side that subsequently sent Borussia Dortmund crashing out of the competition.
Dragao should be dripping with goals
Porto claimed just five Champions League points in an admittedly very tough group before getting the better of Lazio in two entertaining contests last month. There were 11 goals in their three home UCL contests and at least three in both of their playoff round legs against the Serie A side.
The odds on three or more goals in Wednesday’s tie are tempting, given 13 of Porto’s last 16 matches have been ‘overs’ while the bet would have landed in four of Lyon’s last five European games. It would have landed in more of Les Gones’ Ligue 1 games too if they had been able to finish off the good chances being created. Lyon’s xG is the third-highest in the division and reveals they should have scored approaching ten more goals than they have done.
Their finishing was spot on last Friday in Brittany, which encourages us to back the visitors to score at least once in this game and contribute to another high-scoring affair. Porto haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last six at the Dragao and Lyon have shipped 17 in their last 11 aways, so a 2-1 home win seems to fit the form quite well.
