Fiorentina’s name wasn’t mentioned all that much when the Serie A title contenders were discussed in the preseason. It’s getting mentioned quite a bit more now as they sit second in the table, just one point behind Inter Milan and playing good football.

It seemed like Fiorentina were always up for it this season and they’ve been able to take advantage of the absence of a brutally consistent club in the division.

They started 2016 the right way with a convincing 3-1 away victory over Palermo and they’ll look to build off that result with another strong performance at home against an ailing Lazio.

For all the parity and tightness in Serie A, this season is fast getting away from Lazio, who returned to European football in 2014/15 thanks to a third place finish. Any hopes that the Christmas break would provide this squad with an opportunity to return refreshed appear to have been squashed when they were held by relegation contenders Carpi 0-0.
