La Viola ticking the right boxes for Conference League run

Fiorentina’s best work has come in the Europa Conference League this season and with their Serie A status relatively secure, they can afford to focus on ending a 22-year wait for a major trophy.

La Viola impressively dispatched Braga in the last round of the competition, putting four past the Portuguese away from home before edging a five-goal thriller back in Florence to record a sixth straight Conference League win.

They have since won twice in Serie A to move 13 points clear of the relegation zone, dispatching champions Milan at the weekend, setting Vincenzo Italiano’s men up nicely for the first leg of their last-16 tie with Sivasspor.

Attack best form of defence for visitors

The Turkish outfit are embroiled in a relegation scrap domestically and much like Fiorentina, the Europa Conference League has offered some relief from life at home.

They topped a relatively weak section to advance to the knockout rounds in European competition for the first time and bring plenty of firepower to the party, albeit they are missing their topscorer from the group stages, Yatabare Mustafa, through injury.

Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem for the Turkish Cup holders but keeping them out is another matter with Karagumruk putting four pasts them at the weekend, while they’ve conceded 11 across eight European outings this season.

Fiorentina are the Conference League’s top scorers with 21 goals this term and the competition’s leading marksman, Luka Jovic, should relish a last-16 clash that should end in a big win for the Viola.
