Fortaleza struggling for points – and goals

While last year’s fourth-placed Serie A finish means Fortaleza are playing in the Copa Libertadores for the first time in their history this term,  Juan Pablo Vojvoda’s men have endured a dire start to their league campaign, sitting bottom of Serie A without a win to their name, and things could get worse for the Tricolour before they get better, as they travel to last year’s runners-up Flamengo.

Although Paolo Sousa’s men have not made a sterling start to the new campaign themselves, sitting eighth after winning three of their first eight league games, a run of four successive wins in all competitions – the last of those a huge derby victory over Fluminense, means things are looking up for one of Rio de Janeiro’s four major clubs, who have the division’s third-best defensive record after shipping just seven goals this term.

Fortaleza may struggle to penetrate that rearguard after scoring a pitiful four league goals this season, managing just one in their last three Serie A outings despite exclusively facing bottom-half opponents. Fortaleza are also the only team in the league with a 100 per cent losing record away from home, going down in each of their three road trips, so won’t hold out much hope on Sunday.

Flamengo should be untroubled

Given the excellent form of Flamengo and the dire attacking record of their visitors, backing Sousa’s team, one of the best organised outfits in Serie A, to win to nil looks a strong play.

A 2-0 home victory, meanwhile, looks a decent correct score prediction as Flamengo look to extend their run of no defeats in their last six meetings with Fortaleza.
