Forest Green Rovers vs Southend Predictions
- Forest Green finished 15 points above Southend.
- Forest Green won 15 of their 23 home games (D7, L1).
- Both regular season league games finished 2-2.
Wembley awaits Rovers or Shrimpers
Forest Green and Southend meet at the New Lawn on Wednesday in the National League play-offs.
The winner of this game will come up against either York or Oldham in the final at Wembley and secure a return to the Football League – and home advantage gives The Green a key edge.
Southend booked their play-off spot on the final day of the season and then came back from 3-1 down to overcome Rochdale in extra time in their opening play-off fixtures. The Shrimpers have rode their luck a bit to get this far, but that fortune may run out as Rovers have made their home ground a bit of a fortress this season.
Forest Green lost just one of their home games in the league this season and that defeat came against Gateshead towards the end of the campaign, when they were out of the running for automatic promotion and comfortably in line to finish either second or third.
These sides did play out two 2-2 stalemates in the league but Southend needed fairly late equalisers on both occasions, and with a place in the Wembley final at stake and a home crowd behind them Forest Green can get a win over the line against the Shrimpers when it matters most.
This could be a fairly high-scoring game and a 3-1 win for Forest Green is the correct score pick, possibly with a late strike to kill the tie off. Over 3.5 goals landed in both league meetings and in Southend’s first play-off game, and Rovers have scored multiple goals in six of their last nine home fixtures.
Christian Doidge looks a reasonable contender for an anytime goal after a solid contribution of 12 goals in 41 games for Rovers this season. The 32-year-old was used sparingly in the final few fixtures, presumably to ensure he remained fresh for the play-offs, and he was on target in the 1-1 draw with Hartlepool last time out despite featuring for just 17 minutes.
