France U23 vs Japan U23 Predictions
- Japan have won both of their group games, but are yet to guarantee a place in the next round.
- France have conceded seven goals in two games at the Olympics.
- Japan are unbeaten in last six games (W5, D1).
Japan can secure knockout spot with victory
France have disappointed at the 2020 Olympics and chances are they will be making an early exit irrespective of their result against Japan on Wednesday.
Japan have six points from their two games but could still be eliminated if they lose and Mexico beat South Africa. As such, the host nation should pick their best XI and we think they can wrap up the first round with a perfect record by seeing off the French, who either need to win by two goals or better Mexico’s result against South Africa to progress.
Les Bleus were 4-1 thrashed by Mexico in their opener and then scraped through with a 4-3 comeback win against a poor, and depleted, South Africa. In contrast, Japan look like a well-oiled machine after beating South Africa 1-0 before staking a serious claim as a medal contender with a 2-1 success over El Tricolor.
While France look disjointed and porous at the back, the young Blue Samurai have shown real strength in defence and have been able to break their opponents down at the other end.
Japan look good value to win this match, and a 2-0 win for the host nation appeals. The Asian side aren’t necessarily prolific scorers but did manage two against Mexico and if they go two up against Les Bleus they may well ease off with the knockout games still to come.
