Mainz to make home advantage count

Mainz will look to harness the energy of the MEWA Arena on Thursday as they host Strasbourg in the first leg of their Europa Conference League quarter‑final. Urs Fischer has breathed life into the previously faltering 05ers, dragging them out of relegation trouble and into the thick of a European trophy tilt.

The Bundesliga side have been excellent at home throughout their run in this competition, winning four of their five matches and conceding only once in those fixtures. Strasbourg, meanwhile, have arguably been better on the road.

Under Liam Rosenior and Gary O’Neil, the Ligue 1 side have won all five of their European away trips this term. But recent injury issues have bitten hard and they could struggle to sustain their usual intensity following on from a good 3-1 win over Nice last weekend.

Step up for Strasbourg 

Although Strasbourg impressed in the league phase, this represents a significant step up in difficulty. Mainz’s blend of physicality, organisation and home momentum should give them the edge.

The French club will almost certainly try to keep things tight and frustrate the hosts, but Mainz’s strong home record and superior balance make them the likelier winners. Back the Bundesliga side to take a narrow first‑leg lead.
