Over 2.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

At least three goals have been scored in five of Genoa’s last nine home league games and in seven of Inter’s last 10 away Serie A matches, so this unlikely to be a low-scoring affair. Both teams have been among the goals in pre-season too with Genoa looking particularly potent in a recent 2-1 win at Monaco.

Inter Milan 2-1

Reason for tip

Inter have won each of their last five Serie A season openers and with the continuity of a squad that were the best in Italy last season, they should overcome Genoa on their home patch with a 2-1 victory the pick.

Nerazzurri begin their Scudetto defence

Inter begin their Serie A title defence at the Marassi on Saturday with every likelihood of picking up where they left off last season under Simone Inzaghi.

The Nerazzurri have strengthened their squad with the summer additions of Piotr Zielinski and Mehdi Taremi, although neither may be in the starting line-up for this game with Inzaghi expected to opt for Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram up front.

Genoa sold their first-choice keeper to Inter to provide competition for Yann Sommer while the ongoing speculation around Albert Gudmundsson’s departure seems certain to preclude him from selection.

New Genoa partnership may surprise

Coach Alberto Gilardino has been pairing Junior Messias with new recruit Vitinha in an experimental forward line after having lost Mateo Retegui to Atalanta.  Messias scored in a 2-1 friendly win over Monaco and last week’s 1-0 Coppa Italia victory over Reggiana, so could be their main threat on the day.

But the visitors are rarely caught napping on the opening day of the campaign as their record of five straight wins on matchday one illustrates.

Inter look too strong on paper for the Rossoblu, but Genoa have claimed a point in this fixture in each of the past two seasons so a bet on over 2.5 goals may prove more enjoyable than backing the visitors at relatively short odds. At least three goals have been scored in five of Genoa’s last nine home league games and also in seven of Inter’s last 10 away Serie A matches.
