Genoa gave Inter a run for their money

Genoa can leapfrog Monza in mid-table if they beat the Serie A newcomers at Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris on Saturday evening.

Il Grifone gave Inter Milan a scare on Monday in a 2-1 defeat that they could easily have taken a point from with a little more composure and clinicality. Alberto Gilardino’s side have been pretty solid of late, bar a 4-1 home defeat against Atalanta when the visitors scored twice in stoppage time.

Neither they, or Monza, have set the pulses racing in Serie A this season, but both can be capable of good football on their day.

Monza are meandering to a mid-table finish

Monza’s objective at the start of the campaign would have been to improve on last season’s debut finish of 11th and top 52 points — the first of which still looks very possible. They have been solid and unspectacular on the road with four wins, four draws and five defeats.

Raffaele Palladino’s side lost 4-1 at home to Roma last week to break a five-match unbeaten run and it remains to be seen if that result erodes their confidence. They are a tempting price to pick up a third away win in five, but the sensible option here is probably to oppose goals.

Whichever team scores first in this clash will have a huge chance of taking the spoils, but given both clubs have been partial to drawing lately, a 1-1 stalemate could be the most likely outcome.
