Germany vs Hungary Predictions
This isn’t the sort of build up that Germany will have been hoping for as they look to follow their World Cup triumph up by lifting the European Championship. They were pushed hard in Group D of the qualifying stage and only pipped Poland to the top spot by a single point. Overall, they dropped eight points in ten matches and only picked up one point from their two matches against Republic of Ireland.
Things haven’t gone any better for them in the friendlies since the end of qualifying either. They started off by losing to France 2-0 and then let a two goal lead slip at home to England and lost 3-2. A 4-1 win over a drab Italy side followed at the end of March, but their first of the Euro 2016 warm up friendlies saw them lose 3-1 at home to Slovakia.
Hungary are looking forward to a Euro 2016 group stage which they have every possibility of qualifying from. They are in a group with the unpredictable Portugal, the untested Iceland, and the talented Austria. Any of these teams have it in them to collapse massively, and that will give Hungary great hope of being involved in the knockout stages.
They qualified for the tournament after finishing 3rd in Group F behind Northern Ireland and Romania and then beating Norway 3-1 on aggregate in the playoff round. This doesn’t bode particularly well for them considering they only managed 16 points in arguably the easiest group in qualifying, but they come into this match in fairly decent form.
They have only lost one of their last 11 matches and have won five times. Their first warm up friendly saw them draw with Ivory Coast to make it two wins and two draws since their last defeat.
Joachim Low is expected to field a full strength squad on Sunday though, and that’s something that will make it incredibly difficult for Hungary. Away from home the visitors have only won three of their last nine as well.
Germany have been playing their part in some high scoring games recently as well thanks to their shaky back line and devastating line up of attacking players. Eight of their last ten outings have seen at least three goals scored in them, and judging by Hungary’s 4-3 defeat to Greece recently and an 8-1 thrashing by Netherlands a few years ago they have the potential to get turned over. Odds of 7/10 for a Germany Win and Over 2.5 Goals look good value to me, so I’m backing that along with a 3-1 correct score prediction at 10/1.
