Portugal Double Chance (Win or Draw)

Reason for tip

Portugal were able to frustrate France at Euro 2024 and force them to penalties and that defensive approach should help them frustrate Germany in this Nations League semi-final. The Germans are missing plenty of important players, with Antonio Rudiger, Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz missing for a side who have struggled to control games since Toni Kroos retired.

Both teams have scored in five of Germany’s last seven, with two of their previous three finishing as score-draws. Portugal have drawn two of their last three matches, while both of their knockout games at Euro 2024 last summer finished level.

Germany vs Portugal Predictions

  • Germany have a string of injuries through the spine of their team
  • The PSG midfield pairing of Vitinha and Joao Neves can be key for Portugal
  • Portugal frustrated France at Euro 2024, taking them all the way to penalties

Portugal can frustrate hosts

Germany are favourites to win their first Nations League title on home soil this month, but they’re missing a string of key players as they look to build off their Euro 2024 run.

There are issues throughout the spine of the team, with Antonio Rudiger and Nico Schlotterbeck ruled out at the back. Jamal Musiala is missing in midfield, along with Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller, who started the quarter-final clash with Italy in March.

Up front, Germany will be without Kai Havertz and Gladbach forward Tim Kleindienst, who has scored four goals across his first six internationals.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side were incredibly reliant on Toni Kroos last summer, since his retirement, they’ve not been as strong when it comes to controlling games. They blew a 3-0 lead at home in the second leg of their quarter-final against Italy earlier this year.

Roberto Martinez has shown across spells with Belgium and Portugal that he can set teams up to frustrate at this level. His side took France to penalties in a 0-0 draw at the Euros last summer.

The Portuguese look capable of winning the midfield battle here, as Germany are short on options to partner Leon Goretzka. Portugal have PSG pair Vitinha and Joao Neves, along with Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva.

Portugal’s midfield can give them a foothold in this game, while their defensive set-up ahead of Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa can help to frustrate the hosts and avoid defeat.
