Gibraltar vs Switzerland Predictions
Second placed-Switzerland are nearly immune from the Group D drama on Monday night. They head to bottom side Gibraltar in the most straightforward of must-win clashes. The Swiss are a win away from securing their place at Euro 2020, while the other two sides in the running are set to fight it out in Dublin. Can the Swiss ease towards the finals with a comfortable win in this trip?
The Swiss have moved into a commanding position with three wins in four, which has put them into the top two and on course for the Euros. They could still slip out of the running and end up in the playoffs, but that would require a dramatic reversal in fortunes for the hosts. With the visitors fresh from a victory over second-bottom Georgia, they should be searching for a comfortable victory in this clash.
The hosts could do both Denmark and the Republic of Ireland a favour with a win, but they have lost their last 11 internationals. Their latest game brought a 6-0 thumping at the hands of Denmark, so we have little faith that Gibraltar can suddenly pull off the greatest result in their history. They bring the curtain down on another tough campaign here, having shipped 25 goals in seven matches, scoring only twice.
Gibraltar have failed to score in six of their seven group games, while they head into this one with a terrible record against this group’s biggest scoring threats. While the Irish look incredibly stunted in attack, the hosts have shipped 16 goals in total across their three matches with Denmark and Switzerland. They’ve been just as bad at home as they’ve been away, while they’ve lost every one of their Euro qualifiers in their history.
Given that form, we expect the Swiss to make short work of this clash. They head here basically through, while they can put a ribbon on it with a thumping win in this trip. Having put four past Gibraltar in the reverse meeting, we expect them to clear a -3 handicap here. The hosts have lost by four or more in 12 of their last 17 Euro qualifiers, so we’re backing Switzerland with a -3 handicap here.
On top of that, we’re backing a 4-0 win for the Swiss given that the hosts have shipped 19 goals in their last four games in this group. We think the Swiss will follow up on that with another four goals here, while we doubt that Gibraltar’s poor scoring record will get any better. That has us going with a 4-0 correct score prediction.
