Gills can provide test for Saints

Gillingham underlined their credentials as potential League Two promotion candidates with a 1-0 win at Stockport over the weekend and now have a chance to test themselves against Southampton.

Saints made a perfect start to their bid to bounce back to the Premier League at the first attempt with a 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday, but may be tempted top rotate for this EFL Cup assignment.

Both teams to score a clear starting point

If Saints name their strongest side or close to it they should be able to avoid a cup upset here but the best bet could be both teams to score.

The Gills look to have recruited well over the summer and had a good scoring record at home towards the end of last season, having scored in each of their last seven home games.

Both teams have scored in five of Southampton’s last six competitive games and they haven’t managed a clean sheet since March – a run stretching 13 games and 18 if their five pre-season friendlies are included.

A Gillingham goal may prove to be just a consolation, however, as Saints boss Russell Martin should name a team strong enough to win this game. The St Mary’s club will be looking to build some momentum after beating Wednesday and a 2-1 win looks a reasonable correct score prediction.
