Mariners can seize initiative

The League Two play-offs get underway on Sunday and the first clash sees Grimsby take on Salford City in a 3pm kick off.

Salford were held to a draw at Crawley in the final round of fixtures and that ultimately cost them a place in the top three, as a win would have seen them edge ahead of Cambridge. On the balance of play the Ammies were unfortunate not to win and they were facing a team scrapping to avoid dropping out of the EFL, and if they can get over the disappointment of missing out on automatic promotion they will fancy their chances of beating the Mariners over two legs.

Salford finished three points above Grimsby in the table but the hosts had the better of the head-to-head meetings, winning home and away by an aggregate score of 5-1, and with home advantage they can claim a slender lead.

Grimsby look capable of winning but they may have to settle for a 1-0 win. Salford have only conceded two goals across their last five games but they’ve failed to score in three of their last four trips, including a pair of 1-0 losses.
