Emery returns to Europe

Aston Villa head north to Edinburgh on Wednesday evening for a clash which marks their return to Europe. It’s a speedy return to this competition for Unai Emery, who led Villarreal in this competition less than a year ago. He won the Europa League with the club in 2021 before taking them to a Champions League semi-final in 2022, so his European experience in huge.

Having seen West Ham claim European glory in this competition, Villa will hope they can follow suit in 2024. They certainly have the right boss for it, with Emery lifting the Europa League on four occasions. Before that, they need to qualify for the group stage by seeing off Hibs across two legs.

Hibs beat Luzern 5-3 on aggregate after seeing off the Andorran side 7-3, so their run in this tournament has been quite open. In fact, each of their last seven Conference League games have seen both teams score, while they meet a Villa side who conceded five in their first away trip of the season.

Villa have also scored five times in the Premier League already, so this clash looks good for goals. Hibs can’t afford to sit back ahead of next week’s return leg and they’ll have to push forward once Villa break through their defence.
