      Hibernian vs Elgin Predictions

League Two side Elgin City will travel to Edinburgh as they are hosted by Hibs at Easter Road on Saturday. Can the underdogs cause an upset?

It’s been an interesting season so far for Hibs and Neil Lennon. The Edinburgh club got off to a fantastic start in the league, which followed an impressive yet disappointing European campaign. The Hibees were seemingly challenging city rivals Hearts for the top spots in the league, as both Aberdeen and Celtic struggled to find their feet at the beginning of the league season.

However, Hibs’ season quickly turned into a nightmare towards the end of October following a 4-2 defeat to Celtic. This loss would be followed by a long winless run that lasted seven games, as the Hibees picked up a mere three points in the process.

Things seemed to pick up for the club at the start of December, with two consecutive wins over Hamilton and Celtic, the latter being the more impressive result. The next three games saw Lennon’s men draw thrice, twice against Rangers and once with Livingston- not bad results. Unfortunately for the Hibees, they weren’t good enough in the final game of the year against Hearts, as the Jambos took the bragging rights after winning the game 1-0 at Easter Road thanks to Ollie Lee’s first half goal.

Underdogs Elgin City have a huge task on their hands when they travel to Edinburgh. The League Two side currently sit in 5th place in the table, a mere three points from Annan Athletic- who sit in the promotion play-off spot.

The Black and Whites enjoyed a comfortable season last year, finishing in 6th place and just five points off the promotion position in the league. However, City faced an early exit from the Scottish FA Cup, as they were eliminated by Dumbarton in Novermber 2017 following a disappointing 1-0 loss.

After a disastrous League Cup performance in the group stage, Elgin started off their league campaign with irregular form. After the opening three games of the season, the club struggled to string together two games in which they picked up points, often winning a game and then going on to lose the following one.

The last game of 2018 saw Elgin thrash Queen’s Park 4-0, giving the club a positive boost for the new year. However, 2019 hasn’t been kind to the Black and Whites thus far, as they have lost 3-0 to Peterhead, 2-0 to Elgin a 1-0 to Cowdenbeath.

After their winter training camp out in Dubai, Hibs will return from their break with every intention of making it through to the next round and also taking into account they face some hard league fixtures after the cup game. Elgin will be busy trying to push their way into the promotion spots in the league, but they could be tempted to bring down a big name. However, given that the Hibees will be well-rested, we’re going to back them to comfortably win this game to nil and with a final score of 4-0.
