Tip Reasoning

  • Huddersfield kept two clean sheets from three H2H meetings this season.
  • Only Fulham and Middlesbrough won more home games than Huddersfield during the regular season.
  • Luton conceded ten goals while scoring just twice across their last four away games.
  • All six Championship meetings between the clubs since 2020 produced under 2.5 goals.

Terriers can end Luton’s fairytale

This play-off semi-final tie is poised perfectly for the second leg after a hard fought 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road last week. That game was full of controversy with three potential penalty claims and an arguable red card call which Luton boss Nathan Jones was quick to criticise in the aftermath.

The subject of bringing VAR to the second-tier will have to wait though, as Huddersfield look to build on their stunning home form which saw them claim third place in the regular season.

The Terriers have played Luton on three occasions already this term, conceding just once while winning the only home encounter 2-0, which is coincidentally their most common winning scoreline in home league action.

Luton must shake off their underdog tag

Impressively, only two sides won more Championship games when beginning the day as betting outsiders than Luton (W9, D5, L8), so they are almost always in with a sniff. In fact, they wouldn’t be in this position had they not defied the odds so often, with Luton playing in non league as recently as 2014!

This won’t be easy though, Luton will have to deal with a rocking John Smith’s Stadium atmosphere while also dealing with a few injury concerns, just as they have all season.

While a 1-1 draw gives them a chance in this game, a return of just one goal scored across the last 311 minutes of away league play certainly raises questions of Luton’s promotion credentials. Notably, their 2-0 defeat here came within that barren scoring run.

Stick with the favourites

Although Luton’s record as outsiders is impressive, Huddersfield’s Championship record when beginning the day as betting favourites is even more resounding (W14, D6, L1). That 95% unbeaten rate when favoured by the bookies makes them the most convincing betting favourites in the division across the season, so it would be bold to back against them.

Built on solid foundations, Huddersfield have played their way into promotion contention with a solid backline, only two sides kept more than their 11 clean sheets in home league action, which accounts for almost half of their games here (48%).

All in all, we predict that Huddersfield will win this game within 90 minutes and shake off their run of four straight draws in Championship play-off games, at a value price to boot. As for the correct score, we are sticking with their favourite winning scoreline at home, 2-0.

Huddersfield predicted lineup: Nicholls; Lees, Hogg, Sarr; Pipa, Russell, O’Brien, Toffolo; Sinani, Ward, Holmes

Luton predicted lineup: Ingram; Burke, Bradley, Naismith; Bree, Campbell, Lansbury, Clark, Bell; Jerome, Cornick
