Reason For Huddersfield vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

It’s a battle of the new bosses at the John Smith’s Stadium this weekend. The new manager effect is being put to the test, as Danny Cowley arrives at Huddersfield. Meanwhile, Garry Monk is the new Sheffield Wednesday manager, with an away trip first up for a man who has had his fair share of Championship posts.

Huddersfield went in a very different way than Wednesday when it came to picking a new boss. While Wednesday have gone for a Championship regular, the hosts have picked up Danny Cowley from League One Lincoln, after he led the Imps from the National League to the third tier in two seasons.

Sheffield Wednesday will have an eye on the top six with Monk’s arrival, meaning this is a huge test for the former centre-half. He’s had a mixed time overall across his spells with Swansea, Leeds and Middlesbrough, while he did a fine job without much expectation at Birmingham. This feels like a bigger test, especially as Lee Bullen did a solid job as caretaker.

The visitors have proven themselves with some solid results so far, including their 3-1 opening day success at Reading. They’ve won half of their matches to date, but Monk will be expected to improve that record given Wednesday’s solid squad.

Meanwhile, the hosts have had huge problems all season, which included a 1-0 home defeat by Cowley’s Lincoln in the Carabao Cup. It’s almost an odd choice for the highly-rated boss, making the jump to the second-bottom Championship side mid-season. He would have had more stable options, but now he has a major job at a club who confounded expectations with promotion.

Huddersfield look more likely for relegation than promotion on this form, with the hosts conceding twice in five of their six league games so far. Following that terrible run, we’re backing Wednesday to score a couple here. Monk produced an unspectacular, effective attack at Birmingham and we can see his side getting up and running here. Over 1.5 Sheffield Wednesday goals is our tip here.

While we’re backing Wednesday to score twice, we could see them being held to a draw. Cowley is likely to also make a quick impact here, but we doubt he’ll be fixing this defence in a matter of days. Instead, we’re backing the Terriers to show some fight here with a 2-2 draw, a result which would give both of the new men some encouragement.
