Reason For Hull City vs Middlesbrough Predictions

  • Hull are winless in 13 Championship matches
  • Middlesbrough have recorded nine of their ten league wins this season to nil
  • Boro are unbeaten in five Championship meetings between the pair, winning three times

Toiling Tigers set for more misery

Hull did at least show some fight in their 3-3 draw at Birmingham last time out but it was a result which extended their winless run to 13 games and their fortunes are unlikely to change at home to Middlesbrough.

The toiling Tigers are out of the relegation places on only goal difference and quality in the squad is thin on the ground, so Grant McCann faces a tough task steering them to survival.

Prior to sharing the spoils in a six-goal thriller at St Andrews, Hull were edged out 1-0 at home to relegation rivals Charlton and this is another big game for them in their battle to avoid the drop – Middlesbrough are only two points and places better off.

However, McCann’s men are severely low on confidence having not tasted league victory since New Year’s Day at Sheffield Wednesday, suffering some heavy home defeats against Brentford (5-1) and Leeds (4-0) along the way.

Middlesbrough may not be in the same league as those opponents but the new manager effect worked the oracle at Stoke and Neil Warnock’s influence can see them follow up at Hull.

Warnock can continue to work his magic

Warnock made a winning start to life as Middlesbrough manager with 2-0 win at Stoke on Saturday and they could deliver another determined defensive display at struggling Hull.

Jonathan Woodgate was sacked in the wake of the 3-0 defeat at home to Swansea earlier this month having won only one of their last 14 games in all competitions.

The appointment of Warnock showed immediate improvement and given they had just three days to work with their new manager, expect Boro to come on considerably for that outing.

Boro tried to play attractive, possession-based football under Woodgate but didn’t have the resources to adopt that slick style and looked more assured under Warnock’s 4-4-2 formation, with Ashley Fletcher impressing alongside Britt Assombalonga in attack.

Boro performed below expectations for too long under Woodgate given the quality they retain and the more experienced Warnock may be better at maximising the squads potential.

Goals may be hard to come by

Middlesbrough have won their last two away games to nil and we are predicting a similar outcome at the KCOM Stadium.

Interestingly enough, Boro have won only ten of their 39 league games this season but nine of those victories were recorded with a clean sheet.

Hull, on the other hand, have failed to score in four of their last six league games and have struggled in attack ever since January’s departures of Jarrod Bowen and Kamil Grosicki.

Given the league position of both teams and the pressure surrounding this fixture, we are expecting a low-scoring encounter. Our prediction is a 1-0 Boro win – six of their ten league wins this term have finished that way.
