Iceland vs Kazakhstan Predictions
They incredibly completed the double over the Netherlands on Thursday with a 1-0 in Amsterdam courtesy of a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty in the 2nd Half. They are now 8 points above the Dutch with just 3 games to play and could qualify on Sunday night even if they suffer a shock defeat to Kazakhstan.
It is a remarkable story for a side who not so long back barely ever won competitive internationals and you just can’t see them slipping up here after doing all the hard work. There isn’t even that much pressure on the game given they’ve already secured what is likely to be enough points to qualify and in any case they still have a very winnable home game with Latvia to play.
As well as some exciting young players, they have the wise old head of Eidur Guðjohnsen to rely on and his influence could be very important in this game even if he only comes on from the bench as he did in Holland to help steer his side to 3 points.
Iceland won 3-0 in Kazakhstan as recently as March and clearly demonstrated their far superior ability. Their opponents have only 1 point to show for their efforts but interestingly have scored in all their away games so far in this group. They still lost all 3 in Holland, Turkey and the Czech Republic but they clearly aren’t completely toothless in front of goal on the road even against decent opposition, unlike many of the weaker sides in Europe.
The hosts should clearly win but there may be the odd losing of focus in the Icelandic defence with the prize they have waited so long for, so close. Therefore backing Iceland to win and both teams to score at 12/5 looks like an excellent bet.
In terms of a correct score, a 2-1 win Iceland win might be worth a punt at 7/1 as they are unlikely to take any risks in the closing stages, when a win, however it comes, is all they need to make history.
