Reason For Ipswich vs Wigan Predictions

  • Wigan saw a mass exodus in players after relegation and have struggled to make signings
  • The Latics are set to start the season with a back four made up of teenagers and academy products
  • Ipswich hit 2.6 goals per game at home to sides who finished below them last season

Opportunity for Tractor Boys

After a disastrous end to last season’s Championship campaign, things could get even worse for Wigan this term. A mass exodus has weakened them as they drop into the third tier, with many predicting a battle to survive for the Latics.

As one of the biggest sides in the division, Ipswich will be aiming to get back into the playoff picture. The Tractor Boys had a dismal end to last season before it was called short, while it’s questionable how much they’ve improved since last term’s 11th place finish. Despite that, Wigan’s troubles has us siding with the hosts in our predictions here.

Wigan’s defensive woes

Under Paul Cook last season, Wigan were finishing like a midtable Championship side. Their points hit dragged them into trouble, leading to a mass departure including the manager and many of their star names. Nathan Byrne was the latest to go, with his move to Derby leaving the Latics set to play a string of inexperienced defenders in their opener.

Wigan come down looking like a side who will struggle at this level, while time is ticking for them in their bid to secure signings. The Latics need someone to come in and save the club, but there are no signs of that happening before the transfer window shuts in a month’s time.

Perfect for average Ipswich

The hosts underwhelmed in the third tier last season, as they were unable to match the good teams above them. They produced just one win from 15 clashes with the top eight before the end of the campaign, with most of the points coming against bottom-half teams. The Tractor Boys lost only once at home to sides below them, while they scored enough goals in those games to worry Wigan.

The hots hit 21 goals in eight home clashes with sides below them last term, an average of 2.6 per game. They should expect to continue that scoring form, which was the only real redeeming factor in their dreadful 2019/20 campaign. With Wigan shaping up to be in or around the bottom four, we have faith in Ipswich pulling off a result here.

The Tractor Boys have enough threat up top to see off a hastily thrown together Wigan side, so our first prediction is to back the hosts to score at least two goals in what should be a comfortable opener for them. Meanwhile, Wigan’s lack of quality across the pitch leaves us lacking faith in them, so we’re going with a 2-0 correct score prediction.
