Fiorentina have had a terrible second half of the season and it is only the points they amassed before the winter break that are keeping them in the top five of Serie A. A run of one win from 11 matches is a poor run of form in any division, but La Viola were looking well on track for a Champions League qualification place until the last few weeks of the season. Instead, they are holding on to fifth place mostly due to the ineptitude of those below, with AC Milan and Lazio among the sides that would have caught them with a better run of form.

It has mostly been a season to forget for Lazio, whose sacking of Stefano Pioli does not appear to have conjured up much of an improvement of form, with his replacement Simone Inzaghi struggling with the same lengthy injury list Pioli had to manage with. But Lazio have been good at home – winning five of their last eight at Stadio Olimpico – and could overhaul Milan to claim seventh place if they win and the Rossoneri lose.

Opposing Fiorentina will have been profitable for football fans in recent weeks and there are no signs of Paulo Sousa’s side turning things round before the end of the season.
