Tip Reasoning

  • Juventus’s only away Serie A victories in 2021-22 have come at bottom-half clubs.
  • Despite netting in all but one of their Serie A games, Juve have only scored more than once on 3 occasions this season.
  • Lazio are unbeaten at the Stadio Olimpico in all competitions this campaign, and have already beaten 3 of Serie A’s current top 7 at home.

Juve’s Struggles to Continue?

It’s been a difficult return to Turin for Max Allegri thus far, and things don’t get much easier on Saturday evening, as the 8th-placed Old Lady take a difficult trip to Lazio, 3 places and 3 points above them in Serie A.

Juventus have won just 2 of their 6 away games this season, against local rivals Torino and relegation-battling Spezia. The Old Lady’s struggles have largely been the result of a dearth of creativity; though Juve have netted in all but one of their Serie A games, they’ve only scored multiple goals on 3 occasions, the last of which came in September. While Cristiano Ronaldo’s 29 league goals spared their blushes last season, ensuring that they snatched a Champions League place, nobody has more than 2 league goals for Italy’s most successful club in 2021-22.

It’s not as if Allegri’s side have been unfortunate either; Juventus rank just 12th in Serie A for expected goals created, and although they possess the division’s 4th best defence by the same measure, their underwhelming league position is about par for their performances.

Sarri has Point to Prove

Maurizio Sarri will certainly be fired up for this clash with his former employers; Sarri saw off fierce challenges from Inter, Atalanta and Lazio to deliver the Scudetto in his only season in charge of Juve, in which they also came within a penalty shootout of winning the Coppa Italia.

Sarri’s Lazio have been particularly impressive at home this season, winning 5 out of 6 on their own ground, including wins over 3 of the league’s top 7. Despite dealing with the demands of Europa League football, Lazio are averaging 2.08 goals per game in the league, while Ciro Immobile is eyeing Ronaldo’s goalscoring crown, and has already reached double figures.

While Juventus are always dangerous opponents, its difficult to see them clawing back the sizeable gap opened up by Napoli, Milan and Inter at the top of Serie A. I’m cautiously backing Lazio to deal another blow to the Old Lady here, tipping them on the Draw No Bet market. 2-1 seems a good correct score prediction, with both teams having scored in the last 5 head-to-head meetings.
