Both teams return to the Copa Libertadores after a 3 year absence. LDU Quito got off to a good start in the competition against Buenos Aires based San Lorenzo with a 2-0 home victory, where it looked as though the altitude played a part into their success. Toluca are seen as one of the wealthiest and strongest teams in Mexico, they qualified for Copa Libertadores having finished 2nd last year. In 2016 so far they have been in disappointing form domestically failing to record a win in their last 8 matches, also registering 3 consecutive losses in the process, so currently find themselves in the bottom half of Liga MX.

Their Copa Libertadores performances this year however have been more pleasing. They started well with a 2-0 home win against Brazilian high-flyers Grêmio, followed by a 1-1 draw away in Argentina to San Lorenzo, and will look to remain unbeaten in this fixture.
