Lille vs Red Bull Salzburg Predictions

  • Salzburg won the reverse fixture 2-1.
  • Salzburg are averaging 2.3 goals per-game in the Austrian top flight and 1.75 in the Champions League.
  • Lille have just one win in their last eight games in all competitions.
  • Lille forward Jonathan David has seven goals in his last 10 games.

Salzburg on course for knockout stages

Top spot in Champions League Group G is up for grabs on Tuesday night as second placed Lille entertain leaders Salzburg, with just two points separating the two sides.

Salzburg won the reverse fixture 2-1 in what was an evenly matched game and at a big price there is some appeal in backing the visitors to do the double over their hosts with a victory in France.

A win for Salzburg would guarantee their place in the next round and would in all likelihood see them emerge as group winners, and they may be able to qualify with a game to spare by beating a Lille outfit who have struggled defensively recently.

Lille’s backline a worry

Lille made a blistering start at Monaco on Friday night as they raced into a 2-0 lead but they were pegged back and had to settle for a point, conceding an equaliser after their hosts had been reduced to 10 men.

Les Dogues have now gone five games without a clean sheet, conceding seven during that run, and have just one win in their last seven games across all competitions – although they have only lost two of those games.

Salzburg look a real threat in Europe this season as they are a side who are playing without fear and there are goals in this Austrian outfit. Die Rotten Bullen were held to a 0-0 draw by Admira at the weekend but that was the first game in which they have failed to score this season, and they are averaging 1.75 goals per-game in the Champions League group stages.

Lille have only lost one of their eight home games but their last two games have been draws against Brest and Angers. Those results have to be viewed as points dropped from a Lille perspective, and provide encouragement that Salzburg can get the job done here on Tuesday.

Lille attacker in form

While I’m ultimately expecting Lille to lose here, they do carry a threat going forward and have an attacker in real form in the shape of 21-year-old Canadian Jonathan David.

David scored twice against Monaco on Friday and has 11 goals in 19 appearances in all competitions this season. The forward has scored seven goals in his last 10 games for club and country, so a David goal has some appeal here and a 2-1 win for Salzburg stands out in the correct score market.
