Liverpool vs Borussia Dortmund Predictions
Winning the Europa League seems the only chance Klopp and Liverpool have in order to qualify for any of next season’s European competitions, and also their only remaining chance of a trophy this season. Jurgen Klopp’s return to Dortmund was emotional but he remained very professional and solely focused on the task in hand. Liverpool’s performances in the Europa League up to this point hadn’t been particularly impressive, despite managing to stay undefeated throughout the competition so far (W4 D6). However, Liverpool put in a great performance under pressure at Borussia Park. A well worked goal, coolly finished by Divock Origi, mean’s that Liverpool left Dortmund with an advantageous away goal in this 1-1 finish to the first leg.
Thomas Tuchel will be disappointed with his teams performance in the first leg, especially going behind early at home and conceding the dreaded “away goal”. “Der BVB” are on a eighteen-game undefeated run in all competitions (W14 D4), largely thanks to a series of miraculous displays from their star striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was rested ahead of this game in their derby against Schalke 04 last Sunday, along with a few other players. The Gabon international is enjoying his best season in Dortmund, with 36 goals from 43 appearances so far, despite only scoring one in his last 5.
Even though Liverpool have been a stubborn team to better in the Europa League so far this campaign, and that they put in an impressive performance last Thursday in the first leg, they are once again faced with one of the most in-form and lethal attacks in Europe. Borussia Dormund head into this match at Anfield as favourites and, excluding last Sunday’s 2-2 draw to rivals Schalke 04 where they rested some players ahead of this match, they have won the last six straight games on the road. Jurgen Klopp has put Liverpool in a good position going into this match with the away goal advantage, should the game end 0-0, but with both teams following a similar attacking approach and playing philosophy, this result seems unlikely. Liverpool seemed impressive in their 4-1 win over Stoke last Sunday, with Sturridge, Origi and Moreno all getting on the scoresheet, but Dortmund are the most in-form side in the Bundesliga and Liverpool will once again have to try and hold off Dortmund’s attacking partnership of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for another 90 minutes.
For both hardcore fans of these clubs and neutral lovers of football, expect this to be an entertaining and fierce contest. Combining the analysis above with the statistics below, we feel Borussia Dortmund will win this match and see themselves through to the semi-finals of the Europa League with a final score of Borussia Dortmund to win 2-1 at 17/2 being a likely outcome.
