Lorient vs Monaco Predictions

Monaco’s away form trumps Lorient’s home comforts

Monaco are justifiably odds on to win at Lorient this Friday after easily overcoming Sparta Prague over two legs in the Champions League.

Les Rouge et Blanc’s 3-1 second-leg win at the Stade Louis II ensured progression by 5-1 on aggregate to next face Shakhtar Donetsk in the play-off round.

That is about the only thing Lorient have going for them ahead of the visit of Niko Kovac’s men, who they will hope are distracted by the looming tie.

Monaco are already into their stride away from home after the 2-0 success in Prague, which made it 15 wins from their last 17 road trips in all competitions.

Lorient finished last season with the sixth-best home record in Ligue 1, winning eight of their last ten at Le Moustoir, but have since experienced a summer of inertia.

They have gone backwards, if anything, with the departure of attacker Yoane Wissa to Brentford this week leaving them a little short up front.

Christophe Pelissier’s side ground out a 1-1 draw with Saint-Etienne last week, surviving some intense second-half pressure, but Monaco are stronger in all departments and have enough depth in the squad for Kovac to make a few changes and still expect to win.

The Monagasques’ brilliant away form trumps Lorient’s good home run at the back end of last season for us, although we do believe they can score against the visitors.

Lorient bagged 22 goals in 11 home games since January and while we don’t think this will be as open as the 5-2 Monaco win from the corresponding 2020-21 fixture, we do fancy the visitors will be pushed into a 2-1 scoreline.
