Reason For Luton vs Derby Predictions

  • Luton have lost only one of their ten Championship games since Nathan Jones was re-appointed as manager in May
  • Derby won only six of their 23 Championship away games last season
  • Luton have won all three competitive matches this term, recording 1-0 wins at Barnsley and Reading in the last two

Poor-travelling Rams look worth opposing

Luton have made a solid start to the new season, winning all three of their competitive matches, and they may maintain their excellent form at home to Derby.

The happy Hatters have teed up an EFL Cup third round clash with Manchester United after knocking out Norwich and Reading, while they opened their Championship campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Barnsley.

Luton have been a revelation since re-appointing Nathan Jones in May. His presence helped the Hatters steer clear of relegation last season and since his arrival they have lost only one of his ten Championship games in charge.

More is required against Derby, particularly with Wayne Rooney back in the fray, but Martyn Waghorn is injured and key centre back Mike te Wierik is suspended after being sent off in midweek’s 2-1 EFL Cup defeat at home to Preston.

The Rams, who lost 3-2 at Kenilworth Road in January last year, failed to score in a 2-0 defeat to Reading in their Championship curtain-raiser. They also fired a blank in a goalless draw with League Two Barrow before winning on penalties in the opening round EFL Cup.

Philip Coco’s side won only six of their 23 away league games last term and they still look a striker short before they can live up to their expectations as promotion hopefuls.

With that in mind, a 1-0 home win looks the best correct score wager. Luton have won two of their three competitive games this term by that margin.
