Luxembourg vs Belarus Predictions

This Thursday’s game comes from UEFA Nations League D, Group 2 and it is a very big one for these two sides. Luxembourg and Belarus currently sit in 1st and 2nd places respectively and this match will most likely determine who wins this group and earn promotion to League C and more significantly gets a chance to compete for a place at Euro 2020.

It would be a huge achievement for either side if they were to reach it, with neither having come anywhere near qualifying for a major tournament previously. The equation is simple for Luxembourg, who know victory would see them win this group and it’d arguably be their most notable achievement as an international side. They have been really impressive in this group, taking 9 points from their 4 games to top it.

Belarus are only 1 point further back and with a final game against San Marino, they will feel as though a draw here would give them a very good chance of topping this, with Luxembourg facing a tougher game in Moldova on match-day 6. Belarus are actually yet to concede a goal in this competition but two goalless draws against the Moldovans have held them back, although they might just settle for a repeat here even though it would leave qualification out of their hands.

It’ll be interesting to see how both teams respond to the pressure of the situation here. Neither side are really used to playing matches where there is genuinely something pretty big at stake and it could be quite a cagey match. Defensively Belarus are very solid, with just 3 goals conceded in their last 8 internationals. 2 of those goals actually came against France in the build-up to their World Cup triumph in Russia so they will fancy their chances of keeping things tight here.

Luxembourg have also been defending very well of late. They’ve conceded just once in their last 6 internationals, that goal coming in their 1-0 defeat to Belarus in the reverse fixture. That loss was one of just 2 defeats in their last 10 matches so even before this group, Luxembourg’s form had started to pick up and overall this has all the makings of a pretty even, low-scoring game.

7 of Belarus’ last 8 games have seen under 2.5 goals while only 1 of those 8 saw both teams score and with the stakes high here, backing Under 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score – NO looks to offer value.
