Group A’s top two has already been confirmed so this is a chance for first-placed Lyon and second-placed Rangers to do some experimentation and rotation before the knockout phases of the competition.

The French side are struggling domestically and currently occupy 12th spot in Ligue 1 – disappointing by their standards. However, this group has been pretty much plain sailing as they’ve scored an average of three goals per game in this competition. Despite that stat, they’ve been leading at halftime just once in these group stage games. That lead came in the reverse fixture against Rangers and they now boast the records of scoring more goals and claiming more wins in the competition than any other French side.

Steven Gerrard has left for a new challenge and now new manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst takes the reigns. His tenure started with a 2-0 win over Sparta Prague on matchday five and they’ve won their three subsequent matches too. Rangers have a questionable away record in European Group stages, winning just two of their last 11 outings on the road but they can be confident given that they are the only Scottish side to ever travel to Lyon in Europe and secure a win.

We think there may be a lack of intensity here given that both teams are already through and nothing can change. They’ll want to experiment and avoid any injuries so we’re expecting a fairly passive game. However, the hosts are enjoying the European nights and so we think they’ll get the win in a fairly tame match.
