Maastricht vs Telstar Predictions

Both of these teams still harbour ambitions of reaching the Play-offs this term, but it’s MVV who seemingly hold a more realistic shot heading into round 23 this Friday when the sides square off at De Geusselt. After a battling 2-2 draw at Jong PSV a fortnight ago, Ron Elsen’s charges got back to winning ways in style last week with a consummate 3-0 success over Helmond Sport, and they’ll be looking to hand out a similar beating to Telstar who they overcame 0-1 in IJmuiden earlier this season.

MVV have been Play-off mainstays for the last few seasons, but the Maastricht outfit have not progressed this term as many fans would’ve been hoping.

Ron Elsen’s men have been extremely inconsistent as demonstrated by the fact they’ve only strung consecutive wins together twice in 2018/19, and they’ve failed to make life difficult for the majority of their rivals who have pitched up at De Geusselt.

Last week’s win over Helmond Sport was just their third success from 11 outings at home, but the manner of victory, coupled with their gritty effort with ten men against Jong PSV a fortnight ago, should mean that confidence is high in the MVV camp going into this Friday’s encounter with Telstar.

Elsen’s side are still 13th in the table as a result of their poor form at the end of last year, but they’re only two points behind the Play-off spots and could make up further ground this week with another win, depending on how other teams around them fare.

Visitors Telstar are by no means out of the Play-off race either, but the IJmuiden outfit are really underachieving at present down in 16th.

They finished ten places higher last term giving optimism that 2018/19 could be the campaign where they finally escape the second tier after over 40 years, but Mike Snoei’s team have barely threatened at all to even match last season’s promising effort.

It’s a tall order for Telstar to get back in the shake up for the Play-offs and they go into Friday’s game seven points in arrears, with a glut of sides queuing up in front of them.

Snoei’s side have steadied the ship somewhat with three draws on the spin since the turn of the year (including a respectable 1-1 stalemate at home to 4th placed Sparta last week), but they need to rack up a sequence of victories to get back in the hunt.

That seems highly unlikely based on all evidence seen so far this season, but they may be capable of getting another draw here having turned in some fairly decent displays on the road of late (W2, D1, L2 from their last five), especially if MVV fail to kick on after their recent results.

All in all, there’s enough doubt surrounding both sides here to swerve the match betting, and the steer from us is to back under 2.5 goals.

That’s been a feature of the last four meetings between this pair, and there are plenty of other stats to support our wager.

50% Telstar’s games this term have seen fewer than 2.5 goals hit the net, with the same applying to 55% MVV’s matches. Both sides have averaged 1.14 goals per game which is a pretty meagre figure for this division, and Friday’s hosts have kept 8 clean sheets from their 22 starts.

It makes under 2.5 goals look very generous indeed at evens, and we’re also predicting another 1-1 draw for Telstar after playing out that scoreline in their last three fixtures.
