Macclesfield vs Tranmere Predictions

Last season the clash between Macclesfield Town and Tranmere Rovers was taking place in the National League,  but both sides have progressed well since then and now find themselves meeting in the fourth tier of English Football. With the hosts battling against the possibility of being demoted back to non-league football, it promises to be a tense encounter when the sides meet on New Years Day.

Macclesfield Town attracted national attention a few weeks before Christmas as they became the first club to give outspoken former England, Tottenham and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell a job as their manager, and the early signs of his tenure are pretty promising. Prior to his appointment the Silkmen were in  danger of being cast adrift, but Campbell has helped tighten up a leaky defence and has been rewarded by an upturn in results which has seen his side close the gap between Macclesfield and safety.

Making the trip to the Moss Rose Ground is a Tranmere Rovers side who have had a far smoother first season in the Football League and they currently find themselves just outside the play-offs in ninth place after claiming 38 points from their 25 outings so far. However, things are not quite as bright as they first seem, as Rovers have been poor on their travels and rely heavily on their ability to claim all three points on home soil. The visitors have managed to claim all three points just two times on the road this term and go into this match having lost in their last five outings on their travels.

The bookies have clearly taken a look at the league table and priced this accordingly as they fancy Tranmere to claim the win. It is not an assessment we agree with as the hosts have improved of late and, when you account for the visitors troubles on the road, we think backing a home win is the only way to go. However, Macclesfield are at the bottom of the league for a reason, so adding the safety net of the ‘Draw – No Bet’ option looks to be a shrewd move.
