Draw 1-1

Reason for tip

The two teams are evenly matched in terms of form and personnel with Mainz scoring only once in each of their lats two Bundesliga games. Freiburg are averaging less than a goal per game across their last five away league trips, but have faced some of the big boys during that run.

FSV Mainz 05 vs SC Freiburg Predictions

  • Fewer than three goals have been scored in Mainz’s last two matches.
  • Fewer than three goals have been scored in five of Freiburg’s last six games
  • Fewer than three goals have been scored in three of the last four head-to-head meetings.

Freiburg must forget Juve blow and focus on top-four push

Freiburg must overcome the disappointment of their Europa League exit quickly when they travel to face in-form Mianz at MEWA Arena on Sunday.

The Black Forest club were a touch unlucky in Thursday’s 2-0 second-leg loss to Juventus as they also came up against a wily opponent with an in-form goalkeeper, but it simply wasn’t to be.

They remain in position to push for Champions League place next term and will see Sunday’s clash with seventh-placed Mainz as a crucial one. Both clubs are unbeaten in their last five Bundesliga outings with Mainz having won their last four home games.

Grifo back to bolster the visitors

Freiburg, meanwhile, have kept clean sheets in their two most recent away fixtures and will set up to give nothing away defensively. Christian Streich should also restore top-scoring midfielder Vincenzo Grifo to his line-up after resting him in midweek.

That could just tip the balance Freiburg’s way, although it may be better to oppose goals rather than the in-form hosts.

Fewer than three goals have been scored in three of the last four meetings between the sides and it may happen again with Freiburg usually an ‘unders’ play whenever they have bene in action recently. A 1-1 draw seems the most likely outcome as the two teams are evenly matched in terms of form and personnel.
