Manchester City shrugged aside their ongoing legal battle with the Premier League to win 3-0 at Liverpool on Sunday, and they can continue their strong start to the Champions League by defeating Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium.

Everybody was waiting to see how the City players would respond to the extraordinary developments of the last few weeks and they gave an emphatic answer.

The scale of task at Anfield was reduced by some key Liverpool injury absences, and it became even easier after Ryan Gravenberch’s 62nd minute red card.

But City refused to wilt amid a hostile atmosphere and, by the end of the game, they seemed to be enjoying themselves.

City’s future is uncertain but, for now, they have an immensely strong squad and are playing with confidence.

And, while their Premier League push could be derailed by off-field matters, a Champions League challenge is more likely to be decided by what happens on the pitch.

However, Enzo Maresca’s side will have great respect for PSG, who are aiming for a third successive Champions League triumph.

The Parisiens triumphed 6-1 at home to Slovan Bratislava on Champions League matchday one, but they have been far from their best in Ligue 1 and are positioned in sixth place, three points behind unbeaten leaders Monaco.

Luis Enrique’s side have kept just one clean sheet since the start of the season and their suspect defence may struggle to get to grips with Erling Haaland, who can play a starring role in a City success.
