The Manchester club are looking to build on last season’s fourth-placed finish, which was ultimately disappointing given they had been in the top three until the end of March, only to be pipped to the final Champions League spot by a resurgent Arsenal team.

And opponents Reading, who finished seventh last season and have since lost influential and experienced midfielder Fara Williams, should represent a straightforward win.

Reading managed only five Women’s Super League triumphs last season and are worth opposing but Man United should not be expected to rack up the goals.

United saw forwards Tobin Heath and Christen Press depart this summer and the team nonetheless scored more than two goals only once in their last six Super League fixtures last season.

They were hardly a side renowned for blowing teams away and although they can win their opening game under Marc Skinner, it could be a low-scoring victory.

Punters are advised to back a United win and under 3.5 goals against Reading, who themselves scored only 25 times in 22 Super League assignments last campaign.
