Mexico vs Paraguay Predictions
Wednesday’s international friendly clash sees Mexico doing battle with Paraguay at the San Diego County Credit Union Stadium. The Mexicans will be looking to make it 2 wins from 2 under new boss Gerardo Martino.
Mexico captured headlines at the World Cup with their win over Germany but couldn’t break their famous last 16 curse, crashing out of the tournament at that very stage again. Since action concluded in Russia, El Tri have been in poor form, losing 5 of 6 friendlies under Ricardo Ferretti, prior to ex-Argentina and Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino coming in and getting off to a perfect start at the weekend.
Attracting Martino has to be seen as something of a coup and if the 3-1 win over Chile on Saturday is anything to go by, the future looks bright under him. Indeed, the side were very impressive in said match and were deserved winners and with a host of talented players in their ranks, Mexico could really turn into a big force in the coming years.
Meanwhile, it wasn’t as happy a start for new Paraguay manager Eduardo Berizzo, who fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Peru in his first game in charge on Saturday. Having failed to qualify for the last two World Cups, Paraguayan football is hardly at its peak and thus, Berizzo looks to have a big job on his hands.
Indeed, Los Guaraníes haven’t been much of a force in recent years and ended 7th in the last South American qualification phase. With the Copa America rapidly approaching, building momentum in these kind of games is the objective but that doesn’t look particularly likely, given the side have now lost 4 of their last 5 games and are extremely low on confidence.
Ultimately, this is a match Mexico will be expecting to win. They looked very impressive against Chile and man for man, they’re by far a stronger outfit than a Paraguay team looking short on confidence. Expected to have the majority of the crowd on their side as well, the Mexicans won’t want to slip up here.
We certainly can’t see them doing so and we’re more than happy to back them winning with maximum confidence. They’ve won their last 5 games against the Paraguayans, including friendly wins in 2011, 2015, 2016, 2017 and that’s a streak we can see them prolonging via a 1-0 margin of victory.
