Mexico vs Sweden Predictions
- Fewer than three goals have been scored in three of Mexico’s last five friendlies
- Fewer than three goals have been scored in four of Sweden’s last five away friendlies
- The game is primarily an exercise in keeping fit for the Mexico players, who are World Cup bound
Sweden could keep El Tri in check
Mexico could meet their match when they take on Sweden in a pre-World Cup preparation match in Girona on Wednesday. Tata Martino’s men thrashed an incredibly-weak Iraq team at the same venue last week, but the Scandinavians should provide much sterner opposition.
Janne Andersson’s side will be without one or two stars – such as Spurs’ Dejan Kulusevski, but most of the regulars will be available and probably keen to make amends for dismal Nations League campaign just gone. The coach will use this to learn about younger players ahead of the European Championships while Mexico will try a few things out that they intend to do against Poland in their opening Group C fixture in Qatar.
El Tri won eight, drew four and lost only two of their World Cup qualifying matches, but those results have little relevance to a game where the objectives are tactical experimentation and maintenance of fitness levels.
Jimenez to miss out
Wolves striker Raul Jimenez, who is Martino’s favoured attacking foil, will reportedly not be getting any minutes after he flew to London for an injection in his injury this past weekend.
Goals could be scarce anyway with players just looking to get through the game ahead of the serious stuff next week, so an unders play looks the safest bet. Fewer than three goals have been scored in three of Mexico’s last five friendlies and Under 2.5 goals has landed in four of Sweden’s last five away friendlies too.
A 1-1 draw is tentatively taken as a correct score play as Mexico’s goalscoring in recent friendlies has been very up and down due to the different quality of their opponents. Sweden have conceded no more than once in any of their last four friendly internationals.
