Mexico vs Uruguay Predictions
Mexico put forward a relatively inexperienced squad for last season’s Copa America tournament due to the upcoming Gold Cup, but this season they can focus entirely on the Copa America. Their squad includes fan favourite poacher Javier Hernandez and the intelligent Andres Guardado, so there is plenty of quality available to them as well as experience with the likes of Rafael Marquez and Paul Aguilar.
This makes this one of the most important group games in the competition, as it is very likely that Mexico and Uruguay will be battling it out for the top spot in the group and the result of this game will prove crucial. If either team wins it then it’s more than likely that they will top the group and put themselves in an excellent position to make a deep run in the competition.
Mexico are in excellent form as well. They have won nine matches on the bounce in the lead up to this game and are unbeaten in almost 12 months, with their last defeat coming against Ecuador in last season’s Copa America.
However, they have rarely faced top quality opposition during this spell. They did earn a draw against Argentina last September in a friendly, but apart from that they have been playing against rather low calibre opposition. Uruguay could be a bigger test for them.
Uruguay have had more of a challenge due to their more difficult World Cup qualifying campaign. Despite their tough run in they still sit at the top of the qualifying table with 13 points from their opening six games, including a draw in Brazil and comprehensive wins against Colombia and last year’s Copa America champions Chile.
Luis Suarez will be a major threat for them, but he’s thought to be carrying a slight hamstring injury which may keep him out of the first few games. Edinson Cavani isn’t exactly a bad replacement to step into his shoes though, and their back line is a formidable beast of Atletico Madrid organisation.
I think Uruguay have the greater quality available to them both at the back and up front, and although their midfield is lacking a bit the likes of Edinson Cavani can create something out of nothing. I fancy them to get the win in this one and put themselves in an excellent position to top their group, and odds of 11/10 for a Uruguay Draw No Bet look very good value. I’m going for a 2-1 correct score prediction as well at 11/1.
