Thrilling conclusion to the opening weekend in France

The opening weekend in Ligue 1 draws to a close at Stade de la Mosson on Sunday evening and an exciting clash looks in prospect between two sides who were well amongst the goals towards the end of last season.

Both teams scored in all but one of Montpellier’s last 11 Ligue 1 matches in 2020/21, with the same also applying to six of Marseille’s final seven outings. Both sequences included the sides’ pulsating 3-3 draw here in April, and we should see a similar contest this weekend as each side will really fancy their chances of making a winning start to the campaign.

Montpellier finished just six points behind Marseille in eighth last term and will be hoping to progress further under new boss Olivier Dall’Oglio, who replaces the departing Michel Der Zakarian. Despite the managerial change, La Paillade are expected to maintain a similar aggressive approach which saw them notch 60 goals in total last season.

Marseille have recruited well over the summer to bring in the likes of Gerson from Flamengo and Cengiz Under from Roma. Those additions should give Les Olympiens some decent spark going forward, and a top three finish could be within reach this time around after a disappointing fifth last season.

The result is a difficult one to call in this opening fixture, but we think the sides could be set for a third draw in four meetings via a 2-2 score-line.
