Newcastle Jets vs Wellington Phoenix Predictions

Jets looking for their first league win

The home sides are still searching for their first but will take courage from the fact that they fought from two goals down to secure a point in a 2-2 draw with Sydney last weekend. Their defence has been their Achilles heel so far with six goals conceded, the most in the league through three matches.

After back-to-back draws which have seen the Jets go 10th in the league, Newcastle are back at home where they lost 2-1 to Central Coast Mariners on the opening day of the season. Both teams have scored in each of their three games so far and Newcastle were the worst team at home in the league last term winning just one of their 13 matches and taking six points from 39 available, so a win isn’t guaranteed.

  Indifferent start for Phoenix

The visitors arrive here off the back of one win, one draw and one defeat to start the season and find themselves in seventh place as they prepare for this trip. After a 2-0 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers last weekend they are back on the road where they picked up a 1-1 draw on the opening day at Macarthur.

Last season Wellington were improved on the road and picked up points in 10 of their 13 matches. Phoenix won five and drew five of their games whilst losing only three. I fancy the away side to pick up something in this game given Newcastle’s poor home record but with either yet to keep a clean sheet it’s hard to split these teams so I’m predicting a 1-1 draw in this one.
